highway waiting for traffic to move knowing that on the other side of the road they are moving at a rapid pace.  It is frustrating to know that maybe a  few miles down the road after a certain point, there is no traffic, and you are going to be late to your destination.  Below are the ten cities that are always in gridlock and feel like you will be stuck forever according to U.S. News.  And the top ten cities in ascending order are…..

Honolulu, Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, Seattle, New York, Houston, San Francisco, Washington, and LA.

The Problem

Now let’s examine why this predicament occurs.  An American usually is in traffic for 40 hours per year.  According to KQED, the reason for our traffic troubles is very simple.  It is due to people’s delayed reaction times.  As one car stops, the delay increases with every driver until there is a jam.

Other sites such as BKLYNER say that it is due to a build up of many small reasons.  There is an abundance of vehicles on streets that are not designed to handle them all.  Other factors include  drivers who change lanes or stop, poor traffic lights, people who walk on a do not walk, and large vehicles transporting goods.  What is important is to identify ways to resolve this.

Solutions

Solutions include: increase in public transportation, use of trains not trucks to facilitate in the movement of goods, stronger enforcement of traffic laws, maintenance of roads done after hours, and redesign roads to be adequate for the abundance of drivers and vehicles.

Overall, this is a huge problem and needs to be fixed.  It can be dangerous if an emergency vehicle needs to pass.  It is important for the roads to be enlarged as towns and cities grow.  For further research about new ideas and resolutions go to NBC or  NCPA.  To find out more about the issue, visit Business Insider.
