Autonomous vehicle technology is rapidly advancing with new safer driving features.  Overall, there are 1.2 million driving deaths yearly.  Multiple car companies including BMW are developing safer self driving cars.

According to theguardian,  the BMW 5 series that the interviewer rode in looked just like a regular vehicle.  It would be difficult to spot the differences.  The technology included is similar to what current cars have.  Cameras are used to detect speed signs and the road to facilitate self driving.

Google is also developing autonomous vehicles.   Currently they are modifying Lexus models to be driven autonomously and building their own cars called Waymo. These vehicles that Google is creating are well made, but maybe too well.  They stop too short while following road laws.  This can cause drivers following to not have enough reaction time which possibly creates a rear accident.

Pros vs. Cons

Although there are many benefits, this technology is still evolving and road laws must be adapted for this new type of vehicle.  According to AutoGuide.com, the sharing of the roadway could get dangerous because people and self driving cars will both be together.  Also, people will no longer need buses or trains to travel if they can be driven by their own vehicle.  This will allow them to complete other tasks during the drive, but could be dangerous because they will not monitor the vehicle’s automatic actions.  In the end, this technology still is very new and is still being developed.  To further research the pros and cons, Click Here.  If you want to learn more about the technologies from  the manufacturer, go to Google (or Waymo).
