Takata Corporation has most recently recalled airbags in Teslas and McLarens. These two additional car companies are now included in the 42 million cars recalled due to overinflation.

The inflation force of the airbag causes metal from the inflator to be shot towards the driver and car.  In total, there are 69 million vehicle airbags that need to be replaced due to this defect.

Around the world, 196 people  have fallen victim to the flying metal.  So far, there have been 16 deaths and 180 injuries.  This is unsafe for motorists because in an accident, the airbags that are supposed save lives could end up killing innocent drivers.

Although Takata is manufacturing new airbags to replace the defects, this will take time and could force drivers to wait until 2020. Depending upon the humidity in the air, these airbag defects could have deadly consequences.

Drivers in the south with more humid air will receive replacement airbags quicker because the ammonium nitrate in the airbag degrades, and moisture can enter the airbag inflators.  If you’re in the north, it could be four years until receive your replacements.

The replacement airbags will cost Takata almost $24 Billion.  This recall cost and car companies no longer wanting to do business with Takata could cause a great economic loss to the company.
